Looking for Guimard : Walking through the Marais, Fran noticed a synagogue with the name of its architect and its date of completion on the front: Hector Guimard, 1913. After that, we had two other Guimard encounters, one serendipitous and one planned. Over a period of about 15 years at the peak of his career, Guimard (1867 - 1942) was very productive and influential. He is perhaps best known for designing the Art Nouveau entrances to the Paris metro stations, a number of which still survive. Smart Cars - Paris 2008 : With gas at about ten dollars a gallon and space at a premium, these tiny-footprint vehicles are becoming very popular in Europe. They will soon be available in the US, though their space limitations (two passengers, room for some groceries) and their relatively high price ($16,000 for the high end model) are likely to make these little guys not all that attractive despite their great mileage--around 45 city, 65 highway, for those willing to brave the highway in what looks a bit like an inverted tea cup.

Arizona May 2010 (1): We start in Tucson : Peter and I joined Ben and Alice, Alice's parents Phil Anderson and Donna Ahrens, and her brother Ted to celebrate Phil and Donna's 30th wedding anniversary with a trip to Arizona, culminating with a stay at the Grand Canyon. Before joining up with the gang, Peter and I headed down to Tucson to visit Kate Flax and Bob Breer, who have been living there about a year.

Arizona May 2010 (2): On to Flagstaff : On Saturday May 15, we headed from Tucson to the Phoenix airport to pick up Ben and Alice, then hightailed it north to Flagstaff on Rt. 17, a 2.5 hour drive that takes you from cactus and sagebrush to snow-capped peaks and Ponderosa pines. Donna, Phil, and Ted joined us the following day, ready to relax after the travails and joys of the Phoenix area—grueling traffic offset by a rewarding shopping experience at the discount mall. Thanks to Donna's expert research, we made our base in a spacious, comfortable house in an excellent location with scenic views! This gallery gives a sense of the drive and the digs.

Arizona May 2010 (5): Sunset Crater, Wapatki, Walnut Creek Canyon : We drove north of Flagstaff to Sunset Crater National Monument, the centerpiece of which is a volcanic cinder cone formed when Sunset Crater erupted somewhere between 1040 and 1100. The volcanic ash was good for farming and led to the growth of the Wapatki pueblo, the remains of which we would visit following our trek about the lava fields. The day ended at Walnut Creek Canyon, site of magnificent high-rise cliff dwellings.

Arizona May 2010 (3): Montezuma's Well and Montezuma's Castle : Backtracking south from Flagstaff on Rt. 17, we explored these sites, fancifully named--neither has anything whatsoever to do with the Aztec leader Montezuma. They are associated with the Sinagua Indians, who lived and farmed here from about 900 to 2450 A.D., then for reasons unknown abandoned the area and eventually were absorbed into other tribes.
